PANTHER PRIDE: Merryville takes home 1st state title
CHRIS SCHOONOVER | Sports Editor
In the Class 1A State Championship in Sulphur, No. 11 Merryville defeated No. 9 Delta Charter 6-3 to take home its first title in program history.
"I can't explain it," Merryville head coach David Ford said. "I'm very proud of our guys. They bought in and did everything we asked them to do. I couldn't be more proud."
Gage Robberson got it done at the plate and on the mound, earning the Most Outstanding Player Award following the contest. Robberson threw all seven innings, striking out eight and giving up seven hits, while going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. "It feels amazing, Robberson said. "Nobody expected it. "I really mixed up the pitches and hit the ball the other way."
The Panthers and Delta Charter each had under .500 records coming into the championship game, but both got hot at the right time of the year to roll into the state championship game. Merryville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sac fly by Brett Bell to score a tagging J.T. Gargis from third base. In the third inning, Zach Cleveland fly out to center but the pop up allowed Causey Owen to score from third base to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Robberson drove in Bell and Stephon Williams with an RBI single to increase the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Delta Charter drove in an RBI single to score Freddie Mango, Jr. and later, on an error, to cut into the deficit. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, J.D. Reeves was hit by a pitch to score Cleveland, and the next batter, Kole Royer, drove in Bell to make it 6-2. Delta Charter scored one in the bottom of the inning, but Robberson and the Merryville defense kept the Storm off the scoreboard the rest of the way. "(Robberson) threw strikes and kept them off balance," Ford said. "He's been our leader all year, from start to finish. He makes sure that our guys are there on time and get their work in. Today, he came in and left everything on field. "I just told them that nobody expected us to be here. Our record in the regular season wasn't very spectacular, and we weren't expected to be here, so we had nothing to lose. If we were going to make it this far, we might as well win it."
The Panthers return all but two players next season – Bell and Robberson – and Ford is ready to get back to work to defend the crown. "I was just so excited for my kids and for Merryville," Ford said. "It's their first boys state championship in anything, and I'm just proud to serve that city. It's a great place to be, and the people are fantastic. "We start over and get ready to come back and defend our championship."
